A good standard of communication in English is essential, as all lectures and assessments are conducted in English. An interest in and enthusiasm for working with hair and people is essential. The aspiration hairdresser will be required to interrelate and work with people during their practical training. The Hairdressing course is approved by the Services Seta, Personal Care Chamber. It is accredited by the South African Qualifications Authority.
A fully equipped salon accredited by the Services Seta is the venue for all the practicals required for the new NQF Hairdressing course. Each unit standard comprises a Theory and a Practical component, which is assessed at the end of each unit standard cluster by an independent assessor. The pass mark for the Practical assessment is 70%, and for the Theory assessment is 50%.
The course is especially designed for the person who has artistic abilities, loves working with hair, has good people skills and interpersonal relationships and someone who has entrepreneurial skills.
As the course incorporates the administration and management of a salon, it is also advocated for those who wish to own and run their own salon.
Learners completing NQF Level 4 can go on to do a Final Summative Assessment (Trade Test), qualifying them as hairdressers. The Certificate is recognised throughout South Africa and overseas, and is accepted as a valid qualification in salons.
The new Hairdressing qualification includes NQF Levels 2, 3 and 4 and serves as a more advanced qualification in hairdressing operations and hairstyling techniques. The course includes the Fundamentals (Maths Literacy, Communication, Computer Studies, Life skills, HIV/ AIDS, etc.), Core (First Aid, Salon Services, Safety and Security etc.) and Electives.
