TOOL, JIG & DIE MAKING COURSES

1. Long term courses and / or Learnerships:

  • NQF level 2, 3 & 4. Each level takes 12 months to complete.

Minimum requirements: Grade 12 / N3 with Mathematics and Physical Science as a passed subjects. We also offer an Accelerated Artisan Training Programme (AATP) of 76 weeks for more advanced students. The student starts with institutional training at the Tooling Centre of Excellence. On completion of this training he/she will be assigned to a company for workshop experience. It is advised that the student approach an engineering company prior to enrolment for sponsorship under the MerSETA grant system.

2. Medium Term Courses:

  • Tool Design & Manufacturing (4-term course)

3. Short Term Courses / Skills programmes:

  • Industry related short courses are offered on demand e.g. Tool Setters; Tuner Machinist; Turret Mill Operators; EDM Operators, CNC Operators / Programmers; CAD / CAM Operators, Injection Moulding Machine Setters; Tool repairer etc.

Duration: 2 – 10 weeks.

  • Based on demand, courses are tailor-made to suit specific industries.

CNC Workshop

  • 1x 5-Axis CNC Milling Machine
  • 2 x Milling Centre (Fanuc & Heidenhain)
  • 2 x Lathes (incl.Mill Turner)
  • 1 x EDM Wire Cutter
  • 1 x EDM Spark Eroder (GAMA Tec)

Conventional Machine Shop:

  • 12x Turret Milling Machines
  • 12x Gear-head Lathe Machines
  • 1x Conventional Spark Eroder
  • 1x EDM Wire Driller
  • 3x Column Drilling Machines

Precision Grinding Shop:

  • 2x Precision Surface Grinders (table size: 254 x 508)
  • 1x Universal Cylindrical Grinder (DBC: 650mm)
  • 1x Tool and Cutter Grinder

Tool Trial-run Room:

  • 1x160 ton O.B.R Press Machine
  • 1x160 ton 4-column Hydraulic Press
  • 1x100 ton Injection Moulding Machine

Metrology Laboratory:

  • 1x Co-ordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) and
  • A long range of Measuring Tools

 CAD / CAM Laboratory:

  • 6 x Computer stations: with Auto CAD; Solid Works; Pro Engineer; Master CAM; CATIA and / or Unigraphics

A World Class Tooling Centre of Excellence equipped with State-of-the-art machinery has been established at our Durban Campus in order to enhance the National Tooling Standard through Education & Training .

This Tooling Centre of Excellence is one of the most sophisticated high-tech training centres in the country. This Centre is a major milestone in fulfilling our commitment to the skills shortage and to ensure sustained economic growth and encourages the manufacturers in producing more local content and increasing exports of tools.

The training of students in this “World Class” environment gives us a quantum leap to the latest technology in training and will give us an International competitive edge.

WHAT IS A TOOLMAKER?

A TOOLMAKER is a highly skilled worker who develops, designs, repairs and produces new tools for use in industry. He is top of the list of artisans.

There are different types of tools used, like press tools, plastic and rubber mould tools, die-casting, forging tools and many others. A tool can repeat an item a million times. Items produced include: parts for cars, washing machines, airplanes, tooth brushes, water bottles, etc.

A Toolmaker uses many types of material: e.g. stainless steel, aluminium, plastic, precious metals, non-ferrous, rubber etc.
